Using Normative Theories to Design an ITS for English Capitalisation and Punctuation

چکیده

Intelligent Tutoring Systems (ITSs) are a technology for supporting teachers. They are intelligent software programs equipped with subject knowledge, a student model, and teaching ability. This paper reports on the outcome of PhD research aimed at making ITSs more robust and effective, by applying normative theories such as Bayesian probability theory and decision theory, to the design and implementation of such systems. An approach is outlined by demonstrating how a normative ITS for English capitalisation and punctuation, CAPIT, was implemented. CAPIT was evaluated in a real classroom at Ilam School in June 2000, and the evaluation results show that normative methods are indeed a viable approach to the design of ITSs.

Optimising ITS Behaviour with Bayesian Networks and Decision Theory

We propose and demonstrate a methodology for building tractable normative intelligent tutoring systems (ITSs). A normative ITS uses a Bayesian network for long-term student modelling and decision theory to select the next tutorial action. Because normative theories are a general framework for rational behaviour, they can be used to both define and apply learning theories in a rational, and ther...

Automatic capitalisation generation for speech input

Two different systems are proposed for the task of capitalisation generation. The first system is a slightly modified speech recogniser. In this system, every word in the vocabulary is duplicated: once in a decapitalised form and again in capitalised forms. In addition, the language model is re-trained on mixed case texts. The other system is based on Named Entity (NE) recognition and punctuati...

A rule-based named entity recognition system for speech input

In this paper, we propose a rule based (transformation based) named entity recognition system which uses the Brill rule inference approach. To measure its performance, we compare the performance of the rule-based system and IdentiFinder, one of the most successful stochastic systems. In the baseline case (no punctuation and no capitalisation), both systems show almost equal performance. They al...

De-colonizing English Language Education in Iran: The need for Islamic educational heritage

The monopoly of Western ideologies, theories and methods through English language education as well as the marginalization of Islamic values in English language learning materials has caused heated debates and controversies among Muslim TEFL scholars. In a descriptive and interpretive analysis, this study attempts to bring light to some theoretical issues pertained to language education and Isl...

Punctuation Input on Touchscreen Keyboards: Analyzing Frequency of Use and Mode-switching Costs

Non-alphanumeric symbols are rarely considered in text input research even though some punctuation is more frequent than the least common English letters. In this paper, we first evaluate punctuation frequency in two contrasting sources (Twitter and Google N-Grams). We then present a controlled study to compare existing techniques for ten-finger punctuation input on touchscreens, particularly l...
